미 국무부가 미국 시민의 북한 여행금지를 1년 연장했다2일 게재되는 연방관보를 통해 미국인의 북한 여행 금지 조치를 내년 8월 31일까지 1년 연장한다고 발표했다. 브라이언 매키언 국무부 관리 자원 부장관이 지난달 30일 이 공고문에 서명했고 1일 오전 8시 45분께 연방 관보에 전달했다. 공고문에서 미국 국적자들이 북한에서의 체포 및 장기 구금될 수 있는 심각한 위협이 지속되고 있다며 미국인들의 신체적 안전에 즉각 적인 위험이 되는것으로 판단했다고 밝혔다. 이에따라 특별한 검증없이 북한을 여행 또는 경유할 경우 미국 여권은 즉시 취소될수 있다고 주의를 당부했다. 국무부에 의하면 언론인과 적십자 관계자 및 인도주의 활동가 미국 국익을위한 방문에 대해 일회성 특별여권을 제한적으로 허용할것이라고 설명했다. 도널드 트럼프 전대통령의 행정부 시기인 2017년 대학생 오토 웜비어 사망 사건을 계기로 시행된 북한 여행 금지 조치가 이번까지 네번째 연장되었다
